The Switch (Finally)

For almost three years now, I have been talking about switching my blog from Blogger to WordPress. I think the whole process felt overwhelming every time I did research on how to transfer the blog and domain. There was always a list of steps with a bunch of technical acronyms and e-jargon that would intimidate me into putting the whole thing off. Typically, I see myself as technically competent, and I love problem solving and trouble shooting tech problems. But sometimes it is the getting started portion of getting things done that is the hardest part. So, here is to a new medium and a fresh start. Cheers.

Progress

Today is definitely a day to celebrate some progress with my own wellbeing. I won’t go into too much detail but I was able to control my impulsivity and not share information that is best kept to myself. I’m pretty proud of myself. This is not where I would have been just 3 years ago. Anyway, I spent most of my day working 1-on-1 with students rather than teaching directly. In economics we spent a bit of time trying to understand the supply curve. Hint, I still don’t truly understand it. Then I spent quite a bit of time walking through one and two step equations with students in math. One thing that I think was helpful with that class is that I had the students verbalize the problem aloud. This is important because the students need to be able to identify operations and functions of those operations before they can move on to inverse operations. These students are still struggling but I can see some growth in their ability to work independently on equations …

My goal

Ask anyone what their greatest fears are and they will probably give you some surface answer. I don’t doubt that those people have genuine fears, just that they wouldn’t be ready to tell the truth much in the same way that I wouldn’t normally be telling the truth.  But I feel that if I don’t make a proclamation about my goals, I won’t accomplish them. I know that this goes against every psychological study that has shown that telling people you are going to do something makes it very unlikely that you will do something, but I also think that through sharing I am confronting the problem head-on. Plus, I have already started the process through communicating my student’s needs to other teachers. My goal for this year is to assert myself and take action when communicating with other teachers instead of letting things remain in limbo so that I don’t have to have the discomfort of saying no or challenging another’s thinking. I can recount millions of times where I shook my head and said …

Financial Security for Teachers: Earning Extra Income

One of my biggest passions is finance. I love talking about ways to earn supplemental income. I love learning and sharing ways to make your money work harder for you. Being a teacher, that might seem counter-intuitive. However, it’s exactly for that reason that I have found that being driven to be more self sufficient is all the more necessary. One of the most powerful quotes I have ever heard is about your ability to achieve in life. I can’t quote it exactly, but it says that achievement has more to do with what you’re willing to suffer through than what you are trying to aim for in life. Having a great job with a great salary is an amazing opportunity, if you receive that opportunity. On this side of the window, we have to work harder for and be smarter with our money. So today I wanted to share with you how I am earning 10k more per year and using it to pay down debt, invest in short and long term goals, and …
