Item Analysis

One thing that I have learned from doing this project on tracking student data for ELLs is that there are many layers to understanding data that is collected. I think that each of the layers are equally important and have been the cause of much of my confusion about how I wanted to track the data. While I previously thought that my issue was the collection of data itself and marking whether or not mastery was achieved on one cohesive document, I was lacking a critical detail in in my understanding of testing for mastery: item analysis. What I was not aware of was that item analysis is needed in order to determine whether or not a student has achieved mastery. While I was intuitively doing this, I was not formally performing this action in an explicit way. This is what I have realized that I need in order to fully implement the tracking system. However, there is one last obstacle that I need to overcome. My brain. Having ADHD means having difficulty focusing on one thing at …

Data Validation (Student Data Update 1)

I was able to complete a huge milestone in my project to document student data in more productive ways. I was going to try to use MS Onenote for data tracking, but this option proved to be ineffective in consolidating everything I wanted in one place. However, I think that option can still be explored at a future date. For now, MS Onenote is tabled. Nevertheless, using Google Sheets, I was able to continue using my tracking document and worked to add a data validation drop down menu for selecting students and presenting data. To do this, I simply created a facesheet for all students that included a menu for selection. This took a bit of problem solving as the formulas I was trying to use didn’t easily copy over from the document I was using as a template. It took me some time to identify what the formula was doing and where it was drawing data before I realized that I needed to make some changes. Once I figured out how the formula was working, I was …

Long Weekends

Long weekends are always a mix of emotions for me. I spend so much time around people that when it comes time to leave for longer periods of time, I tend to struggle. However, this time feels like it’s a bit different compared to previous weekends. It’s probably because I have quite a bit to look forward to coming up. Today was hilarious. I wish I had recorded some video of what happened during the mini bingo session the school hosted. One of my students got a bingo but was too afraid to go down to get a prize. She gave it to another student who screamed “yahoo” and ran out the door as fast as he could. We could hear him screaming as he flew down the stairs. It was far too funny not to record on here. Prior to this, we spent some time finishing our narratives. I did this in the hopes that we can begin the revision process on Monday. The students have not spent a lot of time doing this. In …

Data Matters

These past two weeks have been a bit hectic trying to keep up with all the work that I have to do. I spend the majority of my time right now putting out fires that have been started by the education system itself. I don’t blame the teachers for not having the materials to differentiate their readings. I blame the systems in place that only make materials for the majority and completely leave minority students in the dark. It’s kind of like if your dad went out to buy a family van but bought a motorcycle instead, so now you get to walk to school instead of riding in comfort. Basically, my problem is that I have a decent number of students who cannot access the text due to their low reading level, low level of English comprehension in both listening and reading, and combining all that with the fact that these classes are text heavy. So if you have any more ideas for me, please send them my way because right now I am drowning trying …
